Hi, Iām Jessica
After 18 years of owning my own business, raising two beautiful daughters, and helping to raise two stepsons, I sold my business, considered myself "retired" and began doing charitable work. I was busier than ever running my household, taking care of my beloved dogs, hiking and practicing yogaā¦ I looked at this as the second chapter of my life and it was pretty good.
Then, my girls surprised me with a Mother-Daughter Yoga Retreat in Palm Springs. After one of our classes, my youngest daughter said, "Mom, you should be a yoga teacher!" My older daughter agreed, but I thought they were really stretching it. I was 50 years old and couldn't imagine anyone wanting to take yoga classes from someone my age. Some time passed, and I couldn't get the thought of teaching yoga out of my head. The seed was planted and so the journey beganā¦
I completed 500 hours of teacher certification through Yogaworks and began teaching classes and private lessons in the greater Los Angeles area. I was also inspired to take Yogaworks' UZIT (formerly known as Urban Zen Integrative Therapy) training which teaches Restorative Yoga, incorporating Reiki and Essential Oils.
Through this process, I have learned more about yoga than I ever knew existed and how to bring healing and relaxation to others. I have also been able to work with patients at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center and Palliative Care at Motion Picture Television Fund in Woodland Hills, CA. I am so happy now to be able to pass on the amazing wisdom that has been gifted to me from my training, my mentor, and all of the inspiring teachers I've met along the way.
Later in life, many people say things like, "I feel like a 20 year old inside" and "I can't believe how much time has passed". Since yoga has become my life, I am so amazed at what this body continues to be capable of at any age, and am eager to spread the awareness. It astonishes me every single day and I truly have never felt better. My mind, body, heart, and spirit have changed dramatically with yoga and I can't wait to share these gifts with my future students.

Why is self-care so important?
Self care requires us to really listen to what our bodies are needing in any given moment.
01.
Giving your mind + body what it truly needs is the best way to connect and heal.
02.
You deserve to give yourself permission to slow down and be kind to the body that does so much for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Urban Zen and UZIT (formerly known as Urban Zen Integrative Therapy) is a comprehensive and integrative program that utilizes both Western and Eastern philosophies of healing. This groundbreaking method leaves no aspect of well being, be it physical, mental, or spiritual, unaffected. It is about caring - caring for yourself and caring for others - in a healthy, holistic way, not only when you and your loved ones are ill, but everyday. During a class or a session we integrate complementary healing modalities such as Yoga Therapy (in bed movements and restorative poses), Reiki, Essential Oil Therapy, Breath Awareness, and Guided Body Scan Meditation. Each of these are uniquely designed to address the primary symptoms of stress or illness (pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, constipation, exhaustion, and sadness).
The goal of Urban Zen and UZIT is to treat the person/patient not just the disease/condition.

Reiki is a light touch therapy of hands on, or slightly off, the body in successive hand placements moving from the head down to the feet. Reiki is a complementary healing practice not a cure. Reiki is a spiritual not a religious practice. It does not involve any dogma or belief. Reiki has a balancing and calming effect. The sense of calming that Reiki promotes reduces the nervous system stress response, helping to move towards deep relaxation.

Not at all! Urban Zen is for anyone who wants to relax, restore, expand in their meditation practice, and/or heal from any mental or physical stress. We do not do any advanced Yoga poses during an Urban Zen class, only relaxing and restorative poses and stretches. I love having new students and beginners in my class!

I typically host one weekend retreat a year with smaller workshops and trainings, locally, throughout the year. I am, however, always looking to work with new yoga + wellness instructors in new and exciting places, and hope to expand upon my current retreat experience in the near future! Check back to my Retreats + Events page frequently for current updates on retreats that I am hosting as well as any workshops or trainings.
